It only took Torres going undercover and a fake wedding for Jess to come to terms with two of her favorite people being in a relationship.

On NCIS Season 22 Episode 11, we learned that Torres has been freelancing again without telling his team, and that drives me nuts.

But, since NCIS isn’t a series that normally carries on long arcs, these things arise when necessary to move the plot forward, not to keep us in suspense from week to week.

(Robert Voets/CBS )

I think I might like a bit more week-to-week suspense, but I have a feeling most of you would not. Am I right in believing that most of you watch NCIS specifically because there isn’t a long-running story that would mean you had to watch every episode?

There’s a significant difference between a show like The Way Home, with episodes tied to one another like a delicate piece of lace, and NCIS and other procedurals, which allow you to enjoy your time

together and move on with your life.

I’m just curious if there is anything you would change about NCIS and how its stories are told or if you’re still happy with things remaining the same 22 seasons into the show.

But let’s dig into the meat of “For Better or worse” now.

Holy Matrimony

(Robert Voets/CBS )

We had to know from the ominous music prefacing the wedding and the incredibly stale room in which the couple was being married in the opening scene that it wasn’t for real.

But it was a nice wedding altar, and people were dressed to the nines, so that was good. You have to put forth a little effort to catch a criminal mastermind known as the Wolf.

It was also perfectly timed to bring closure to Jess’s concerns about Torres and Robin dating.

Jess Isn’t Cool With It

(Robert Voets/CBS)

As the episode begins, Torres thinks Jess isn’t cool with him dating her sister. But if she were truly uncool with it, razzing him wouldn’t be her method of showing it. She was kind of teasing him about the situation, which carries a different message.

Part of her totally expected Robin to rip out Torres’s heart and stomp on it, and she was worried about what might happen when things end, as, in her mind, they inevitably will.

However, the more Jess emphasized the casual nature of their relationship, the less likely it seemed to be something that would abruptly end. “Babe” isn’t a term we call someone casually.

Then Jimmy let the cat out of the bag: Robin stays with Torres often enough that she has her own drawer at his place.

A drawer is a commitment to five-time-engaged Robin. The more Jess thought about Robin and Torres together, the more she talked herself into seeing their end rather than their beginning.

So, it was the perfect time for Jess and Torres to marry in an undercover capacity. What better way to really draw out the Robin stuff than for Jess to marry her boyfriend?

(Robert Voets/CBS )

I think she even pulled the “we’re engaged” part out of her ass purposefully to dig into Torres (and her sister). If she could facilitate the end so easily, then she wouldn’t have to worry about its arrival.

For Robin, though, Torres being undercover is the ultimate role play. There wasn’t much Jess could do to thwart their relationship, and Jimmy knew why — she was more worried about herself and what it might mean if Robin and Torres worked out, not what would happen if they didn’t.

I understand that. My sister is dating the greatest guy, and as happy as I am for her (I really am), a part of me sees a future where she moves and finds her blissful happiness, and I die alone. Is that selfish? It sure is, but it’s also a part of our humanity.

Jess used her wedding toast to express her approval of the new couple in front of everyone, practically blowing their cover as often as she said “you” instead of “us.” Still, it was sweet.

Donny Rico

(Robert Voets/CBS)

This was all done to capture the Wolf, as Torres had been doing undercover without anyone’s knowledge other than Vance, who brought Torres into the open investigation.

It only came to light when someone with a fake Navy ID promoted a violent reaction from Torres, proving this was much more than a random dead guy.

Why on earth do so many of these shows have agents working undercover without telling their teammates or at least their commanding officer? I hate that.

First of all, it divides the agent between his actual work and the undercover operation. If you’re constantly working, your capacity to work dwindles. It’s dangerous.

How does that benefit anyone?

It’s not like Torres was infiltrating a gang three states over. What if Jess had decided to visit the bar where the gang hangs out? Someone could inadvertently out him. It’s a stupid idea that plays out stupidly on these shows far too often for my taste.

(Robert Voets/CBS )

Teamwork for the Win

Eventually, everyone is let in on the op, and when they all come together, the case is closed. Teamwork makes the dream work. Lone wolves don’t capture the Wolf. We know this.

Interesting tidbit: Roman, the gray-haired guy with an accent, has been doing parts like these for years. I am rewatching Medium, and Steve Flynn had an important two-episode arc during Medium Season 4. It always makes me happy to see character actors working.

I found the Baltimore PD officer making the trek to NCIS rather odd. He was a skeevy-looking officer who seemed to sweat a lot. At one point, I thought he could be the bad guy. Wasn’t he drinking whiskey like Roman?

The key to tying this together was that Roman loved weddings. Jess’s decision to say she was engaged to Torres wound up being the lynchpin in solving the case, and it was also the end of Roman’s life.

(Robert Voets/CBS )

I knew that Yvonne Zima would have some influence on the case. She’s not an actress who would come in to play a bimbo and nothing else. She’s not as famous as her sister Madeline, but she’s done enough to get a meaningful small role versus a walk-on part that amounts to nothing.

Honestly, I didn’t fully understand where she and Roman’s gang fit into the case, but that’s OK since it won’t go beyond this episode. Sometimes, the case isn’t as interesting as the storylines behind it, such as Jess and Torres finding a way to work together again and share Robin’s love.

While I’m on this walk down memory lane with character actors, I might as well mention that I only recently discovered that Rocky Carroll (Vance) worked with Mark Harmon in one of his many roles as a doctor on TV. They both worked on Chicago Hope.

Is that how they wound up working together on NCIS? Quite possibly. I love finding unknown connections between shows that I’ve never known before.

Have you discovered any connections like that while rewatching TV?

(Robert Voets/CBS )

One last thing before I turn it over to you: The Jimmy wanting to dance bit wasn’t great, but it did allow Casey to call him Capezio and Flashdance, which allowed for a couple of giggles for those other older folks like me.

Now, it’s your turn!

Are you happy that Jess is on board with Torres and Robin?

Do you ever wonder why so many agents are pulled away from their duties for secret undercover ops?
