Day two of the WTA Finals saw former No. 1 Iga Swiatek rally from 5-2 down in the first to dispatch Marketa Vondrousova 7-6 (3), 6-0.

In this match of French and Wimbledon winners, Swiatek won 10 of the last 11 games going away from the Czech. And she kept pace with Aryna Sabalenka in the No. 1 race.

“Even in the first part of the match I wasn’t feeling like I was playing bad,” Swiatek said. “I just felt like I was making mistakes on the last shots within the rally. I felt that there was, for sure, room for improvement, but I didn’t need to change a lot. So I just wanted to be more precise and more solid, not play risky.”

Vondrousova was making her WTA finals debut.

“I was 5-2 up and she started to play better,” Vondrousova said. “She didn’t give me much of a chance after. The second set, she was playing really amazing, there was nothing much to do.”

Swiatek improves to 7-0 against lefties this year winning all 14 sets.

In the evening, Gauff opened her campaign crushing Ons Jabeur 6-0, 6-1. The match was delayed at 1-0 in the second due to a rain storm, but Gauff remained in charge upon resumption. It was the 19-year-old’s 50th win of the season. She has now won 23 of her last 25 matches.

The big news after was that Gauff has released coach Pere Rebe who was hired six months ago just before Brad Gilbert came on board.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t my decision,” Gauff said of the coaching change. “But we had to end the partnership. If it was up to me, I would have loved to have him here. But you know, things happen. Life happens. So no bad terms on our end.

“Sometimes people think it’s bigger than what it is. But some things just didn’t work out and that’s all. I still think that he was a great guy. And obviously, he did amazing things for me personally and also for my game. So I’m sure he’s going to be successful in his next step.”

On Wednesday, Gauff will get Swiatek with the winner taking the group.

Tomorrow, Aryna Sabalenka takes a 4-1 head-to-head against Jessica PegulaElena Rybakina also battles Maria Sakkari.
