In the showdown of the round robin at the WTA Finals, Iga Swiatek swamped Coco Gauff early with a bagel and then rallied from a break down in the second to win 12 of the last 13 points for a 6-0, 7-5 win over the US Open champion.

“I would say this match wasn’t consistent, in terms of the level,” Swiatek said. “So for sure, adjusting to everything that happened was the most important thing. It took me a while because I was a break down in the second set.

“I’m happy that I could actually problem solve a little the way to win these last games. And the key was, maybe being confident and mentally not focusing on the score, but really just sticking with the plan that worked in the first set.”

Swiatek was in full flight early on as Gauff’s forehand let her down. In the second, serving for the set 5-4 Gauff’s shaky serve fell apart as four double faults went by.

“In the second set, obviously, it got more tight,” Swiatek told the WTA. “I was happy I stayed focused. I had plenty of chances in her first service games to break back, but I knew somehow I would use one of those chances.”

Swiatek improves to 9-1 against the American and moves to 2-0 in the Chetumal Group.

Ons Jabeur followed with a strong win over Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 6-3 in a rematch of their Wimbledon final.

On Thursday, the Bacaral Group wraps up round-robin play with group winner Jessica Pegula meeting Maria Sakkari and then in a rematch of the Australian Open final, Aryna Sabalenka meets Elena Rybakina. The winner move to the semifinals, the loser has her season ended.
