NFL Rumors: Lions have change of heart on top draft prospect

Despite the red flags, the Detroit Lions are feeling much better about Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter as the draft approaches next week.

It has been a tumultuous offseason for Jalen Carter, but the former Georgia defensive tackle seems to have found good graces with the Detroit Lions.

Though his past is checkered, Carter had a meeting with the Lions, and general manager Brad Holmes walked away feeling much better than before, which could be a sign of what’s to come as the Lions hold the No. 6 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

It’s easy to see why teams would be apprehensive about Carter. In terms of physique, he fits the mold of what a powerful defensive tackle and potential Hall of Famer looks like. Moreover, when his motor runs, there’s no one that can block him with ease, even NFL linemen.

Having said that, there are inconsistencies within his game, including a lack of flash on the stat sheet, that, combined with his reckless driving and racing arrest and his dreadful Pro Day, has left some teams with cause to pause.

Lions rumors: Detroit warming up to Jalen Carter after draft visit

If all goes well and Jalen Carter is drafted by the Detroit Lions sixth overall (thanks to the Rams), there is the possibility that Carter could be the piece that puts the Lions defense in a position where they can be as respected as the offense.

Having said that, the off-the-field issues are still a cause for concern, but if Carter doesn’t go to Detroit, it is very possible that three picks later at 9, the Chicago Bears would take him and make him the engine of their defense. That would be a massive problem for the Lions. Still, a lot can change.

Whatever the case may be, Brad Holmes feels better about Jalen Carter. That’s a good sign. But even so, that still does not mean the Georgia Red will automatically become Honolulu Blue. There is still a week to go before any decision is made, and Seattle could take Carter at five. The waiting game continues.
