In Doha, top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek put on a clinic in her second-round match against Danielle Collins.

The world No. 1 Swiatek was in complete control from the start, winning 6-0, 6-1. The Polish player’s powerful and precise serve allowed her to win 74% of her first serve points and 69% of her second serves. Swiatek was also lethal on break chances, converting five of seven opportunities, while Collins failed to capitalize on any of her seven break chances. The victory improved Swiatek’s record against Collins to 2-1 in their tour-level meetings.

“Pretty confident,” Swiatek told the WTA. “I’m happy that I was kind of composed and from the beginning till the end pretty focused and disciplined with tactics.

“I didn’t really let Danielle get into the rhythm. I wanted to be aggressive. I’m pretty happy that I did that well.”

In another second-round match, second-seeded Jessica Pegula held off Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 2-5, 7-5. Pegula broke in the eleventh game of the third set for 6-5 then served it out. Ostapenko broke in the second game of the third set for 2-0 and led 5-2 with the American eventually taking the last 5 games en route to the win, saving two match points along the way!

The third-seeded Caroline Garcia also had to battle hard to secure her place in the quarterfinals. In a thrilling match that went the distance, Garcia defeated Karolina Muchova 6-7(3-7), 7-5, 6-4. Garcia’s powerful serve was key to her victory, as she won an impressive 75% of her first serve points and hit a total of 10 aces. Despite facing 16 break chances, Garcia was broken only once and managed to break Muchova’s serve three times including at 4-all in the third.

In other second-round matches, Maria Sakkari dominated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-2, while Beatriz Haddad Maia pulled off an upset by defeating 6th-seeded Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 7-6(9-7). Belinda Bencic also advanced to the quarterfinals with a hard-fought three-set win over former champion Victoria Azarenka, while Veronika Kudermetova ousted Sofia Kenin 6-2, 7-5. And 4th-seeded Coco Gauff defeated Petra Kvitova 6-3, 7-6(8-6).

In quarterfinal action tomorrow, Pegula takes on Haddad Maia, Garcia faces off against No. 5 Maria Sakkari, and No. 8 Veronika Kudermetova battles it out against Gauff. Swiatek already advanced to the semifinals after Bencic withdrew due to fatigue.
