Someone will win their first WTA Finals a week from Sunday in Cancun.

The year-end women’s event begins Sunday in Mexico with a new champion assured. Top seed and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is the only player of the final eight to have made the final, coming last year.

Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek will also battle for the No. 1 ranking. Swiatek will likely have to at least make the final to have a chance to finish the year on top.

US Open winner Coco Gauff will try to play spoiler. The teen has been the hottest player the last half of the season winning 20 of her last 21 matches with three titles and wins over Sabalenka, Swiatek and Maria Sakkari who is also in the field.

Sakkari got in after Karolina Muchova withdrew with yet another injury, this time her wrist.

Rounding out the field are first timers and Wimbledon winners Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova plus Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur.

Round round play begins Sunday and goes through Friday.

Tomorrow, Rybakina faces Sakkari and then it’s Sabalenka and Pegula.
