Before Kevin Abstract took the stage at the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival yesterday (April 13), he invited Sky Ferreira to open his set with a surprise appearance. She covered Lady A’s 2009 song “Need You Now” over a stripped-back, synthpop version of the hit. Watch a replay below.

Sky Ferreira’s debut album, Night Time, My Time, came out in 2013. She has not released an album since then, though she did share the single “Don’t Forget” in 2022 and the one-off “Downhill Lullaby” in 2019. Ferreira claims that she has repeatedly “tried” to release her music over the years, a situation she describes as “beyond fucked up.”

Last year, fans who run the social media campaign “Free Sky Ferreira” bought a digital billboard in Times Square to demand that Capitol Records, her label, stops holding her “hostage” and “blocking” the release of Masochism, her sophomore album that’s been teased since 2015. Shortly afterwards, Ferreira was removed from the artist roster published on Capitol Records’ website.

Lana Del Rey headlined the first night of Coachella 2024, where she brought out Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste, and Jack Antonoff for special performances. Tyler, the Creator kicked off his headlining set on Saturday night with a bang, literally bursting out of a camper van and flying through the air. He went on to bring out Childish Gambino, A$AP Rocky, Kali Uchis, and Charlie Wilson for special appearances, too. Tonight, Doja Cat will close out the festival’s first weekend before all three headliners returns again the following week.
