Turin hopefuls Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz both suffered final set breakers Thursday in Vienna, damaging their chances to make the final eight in Turin next month.

Fritz, now 9th in the race one spot out, fell to 22-year-old Alexander Shevchenko 6-7(7-9), 7-6(8-6), 7-6(7-5). The American finished 0-for-15 on break chances, all in the last two sets.

Home favorite Dominic Stricker shocked No. 2 seed Ruud 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7-1). Ruud had love-40 to start the third but would never another chance again.

“Great feeling first of all to win that match, a tough battle out here,” Stricker told the crowd. “Had some tough moments end of the second set and start of the third, but felt really good throughout the whole match and now just super happy. Played an unbelievable tie-break, so I’m just so happy to be through.”

2022 finalist Holger Rune got another win best Sebastian Baez 7-6(7-2), 6-1. Rune strengthened his grip on the 8th spot.

In other matches, Tallon Griekspoor upset the 5th-seeded Alex De Minaur in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Former champion Felix Auger-Aliassime got the better of Botic Van De Zandschulp of Netherlands 6-4, 6-2. And France’s Ugo Humbert upset No. 7 Nicolas Jarry 7-6(7-3), 7-6(7-4).

Tomorrow in the quarters, Rune will challenge Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a first-time tour-level battle.

No. 4 Hubert Hurkacz gets Griekspoor. Auger-Aliassime clashes with Shevchenko and Stricker faces Humbert.
